Arguments Against Parental Notification

We've discussed some of the features that a strong argument needs to have, taken a look at some articles that make arguments on both sides of the issue, and evaluated the quality of those arguments.

Now, it's time for you to do some research.

Using the links below, or your own internet research skills, find articles that argue the following:
Minors should not need to notify their parents to access sexual health services.

Remember, that sexual health services include: birth control, prophylactics such as condoms, abortion, and sex education.

Your Task:

1. Locate an article that supports the pro-notification argument.
2. In the comments section, do the following:

  • Paste the web address for the article.
  • Explain what claim it is making.
  • Write down the evidence that it uses.
  • Explain the reasoning that it uses.
3. Submit your comment, and then start looking for more.

Claim: Doctors have to notify parents before a minor receives an abortion.

Evidence: He points to studies showing that more than 60% of teens (and more than 90% of teens 14 and under) already talk to parents when they consider this difficult decision.

Reasoning: Forced parental notification will not improve family communication -- but it will put teenagers at risk.

Claim- In the New Jersey Assembly court law require parental notification before an unmarried girl under 18 could get an abortion.

Evidence- The new proposal would broaden the language of that law and make no mention of abortion.

Reasoning- "If approved by voters, the amendment would allow the Legislature to pass a law requiring that a parent or guardian be informed before a minor or incompetent child undergoes ''any medical or surgical procedure or treatment, irrespective of any right or interest otherwise provided in the Constitution.''

Claim:Forced parental notification will not improve family communication -- but it will put teenagers at risk.
Evidence:Under Proposition 4, if a teenager cannot talk to her parents -- for whatever reason -- she is forced to go to law enforcement.
Reasoning:Imagine a scared, pregnant teen having to make that decision and then waiting at home for the authorities to come to the door -- the same door she has to return through when it's all over.

Claim - Teens shouldn't have to have parental consent when they get an abortion.
Evidence - He points to studies showing that more than 60% of teens and more than 90% of teens 14 and under.
Reason - Most teens already talk to their parents when they face an unplanned pregnancy.

claim: Parental notification on teens accessing sex health services would result in physical harm to the minor by a parent.
Evidence:. Teen-agers can't control their urges and nothing will stop them from having sex and they deserve the privacy without having to go through abuse from parents.
Reasoning:'What they will fear is the prospect of what will happen if the parents know,''

  8. Claim:For all the passions they generate, laws that require minors to notify their parents or get permission to have an abortion do not appear to have produced the sharp drop in teenage abortion rates that some advocates hoped for, an analysis by The New York Times shows.

Evidence: For instance, in Tennessee, the abortion rate went down when a federal court suspended a parental consent requirement, then rose when the law went back into effect.

  9. http://truth-out.org/news/item/18782-parental-notification-laws-obstruct-abortion-access This claim is against abortion. This claim is against abortion because teens abort not nothing about the danger they are doing to there body and have been abused, have been victims of domestic violence and kicked out of there house to the street.

Claim: The reality is that girls are going to free-standing abortion clinics for serous medical procedures by doctors they have never seen before, without anyone in their family even knowing.

Evidence: Study showed that 43% of minor girls told a parent themselves before getting an abortion while only 55% of those 14 and under did so.

Reasoning: Most teens are already talking to their parents about abortions.
