Arguments In Favor of Parental Notification.

We've discussed some of the features that a strong argument needs to have, taken a look at some articles that make arguments on both sides of the issue, and evaluated the quality of those arguments.

Now, it's time for you to do some research.

Using the links below, or your own internet research skills, find articles that argue the following:
Minors should need to notify their parents to access sexual health services.

Remember, that sexual health services include: birth control, prophylactics such as condoms, abortion, and sex education.

Your Task:

1. Locate an article that supports the pro-notification argument.
2. In the comments section, do the following:

  • Paste the web address for the article.
  • Explain what claim it is making.
  • Write down the evidence that it uses.
  • Explain the reasoning that it uses.
3. Submit your comment, and then start looking for more.

Claim: Children under 18 shouldn't be able to get abortions unless Parents get notified within 48 hours before children gets an abortion in illinois.

Evidence:"An abortion is an invasive medical procedure. Usually, it's better to have an adult family member involved."

Reasoning: It proves that when your having an abortion it would be less emotional when you have another family member who supports you with you

Claim:Proposition 4 places huge burdens on scared, pregnant teens with no regard for their real-world safety.
Evidence:The real purpose behind Proposition 4 is twofold: to deny access to abortion and to close down Planned Parenthood.
Reasoning:The initiative's "option" for teens from violent or abusive homes is so preposterous that The Times editorialized on Thursday that "it's like telling a teen to go to police station and arrest her parents."

Claim- Parents should not be notified about abortions of their teenagers.
Evidence- They mention that abortion is safer than childbirth for teens
Reasoning- They say that people get abused in their families when they are pregnant.

The claim is to make Plan B One-Step and related emergency birth control pills available to consumers of all ages without a prescription.
evidences they use are, the drug prevents pregnancy by blocking ovulation and impeding the mobility of sperm. And it does not cause an abortion in women. The reasoning it uses is The pills are most effective when taken immediately after intercourse and preferably within 24 hours, although they are sometimes effective even after 72 hours.

  5. Claim: without data on abortions, there is no way to know what the teen pregnancy rate is. So that statement is without any factual support.
Evidence: Obviously, there are going to be other factors at work, but of the 16 states without true parental involvement laws, 12 of them are among the 13 states with the highest teen abortion rates (by state of residence of the minor). All of the 13 states with the lowest teen abortion rates in the country have parental involvement laws. In the face of this data, which comes from Planned Parenthood's own research arm, the correlation between parental involvement laws and lower teen abortion rates is indisputable.
Reasoning: Lower abortion rates mean lower pregnancy rates, because we know from these states that teen birth rates do not go up when parental involvement laws are enacted. Lower abortion rates also mean fewer young girls face the abortion-related risks they are particularly prone to.

    Claim - Proposition 4 doesn't work.
Evidence - On the "yes" side, we find a rag-tag assortment of individuals with scarce care-giving credentials, if any.
Reasons - The reality is that huge burdens on scared, pregnant teens with no regard for their real world safety. It's like going to the police and telling them to arrest your parents.

Claim: Proposition 4 puts teens at risk.

Evidence: For every $2 million that proponents spend supporting Proposition 4, we spend $6 million or more to defeat it because it threatens teen safety.

Reasoning: This is money that could have gone toward providing preventive care such as cancer screenings, sex education, prenatal care and infant check-ups.

Claim: It is dangerous for minors to have abortions without parental notification.

Reasoning: The rate of teen abortions are higher in states that don't have parental involvement laws, which is dangerous and alarming.Lower abortion rates mean lower pregnancy rates, because we know from these states that teen birth rates do not go up when parental involvement laws are enacted.

  13. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/rocky-mountains/planned-parenthood-parental-notification-10565.htm They have a agree and disagree on the claim. "some young women cannot involve their parents because they come from homes where physical violence and emotional abuse are prevalent or because their pregnancies are the result of incest. In other cases, young women may not realize how supportive their parents might be. In some circumstances, teens facing a crisis pregnancy feel compelled to travel to another state where there is a less stringent parental involvement law or no such law at all, to avoid involving their parents and maintain their privacy. In the direst circumstances, some pregnant young women who fear telling their parents may feel so desperate that they resort to illegal or self-induced abortions that may result in death."

Claim: it is required for doctors to notify a parent 48 hours before an abortion on a girl 17 or younger.

Evidence:‘The state has an interest in ensuring that a minor is sufficiently mature and well-informed to make the difficult decision whether to have an abortion.’’

Reasoning: The parent should know when their child is getting an abortion they should be mature enough to tell their parents about it especially since its such a dangerous procedure
