Rhetorical Appeals: In Favor of Parental Notification

Now, it's time to use rhetorical appeals to create counterclaims. In the comments section below, write counterclaims for the arguments in favor of parental notification that use one of the classical rhetorical appeals.

At the top of your comment: write "Counterclaim - and whether you are using ethos, pathos, or logos."

Just a reminder:

Counterclaim - a statement that is in opposition to the previous claim.  A counterclaim argues against the point being made.

Ethos this is based on credibility. If you respect the source of the argument, you might believe it. This appeal is based on being an authority, respected, and likeable.

Silly model - I am one of you.  I was raised in this neighborhood.  I live on your block.  I know, because I struggle with this issue too, that we need to start eating more cow’s liver in our diets.

Pathos - this is based on emotions. By getting the audience to engage with their feelings on the issue and using their emotions to convince them of your position.

Silly model - How can anyone imagine eating the bloody insides of something as cute and cuddly as a potbellied pig, or a little baby chick? Anyone who could think of killing an animal so precious and adorable must have no feelings at all.

Logos - this is based on logic and reasoning. By having strong facts (evidence) and explaining the facts in a reasonable way that can be understood and followed by the audience, you can convince them of your position.

Silly model - By switching to a diet in which we eat every part of the animals being consumed for food we will reap a number of benefits.  We will be able to lower our carbon footprint, decreasing pollution, by using the entire animal and avoiding waste.  Our grocery bills will also be greatly reduced because the cost of many of these parts of the animal are low.

Before teens get abortions parents should be notified because a procedure like this is very emotional for the teen and the teen will need support form someone they can trust. It is very hard on a parent if they find out that their teen had an abortion with out them knowing. It will destroy all trust the parent has with their child. So doctors should tell parents to support the teen during the abortion.

Why ? The teen should have known what they were getting themselves into. Some teens do need support from their parents, but what about the ones that don't ? Some teens are afraid that they might get kicked out, beaten or worse. So why take the risk of telling the parent. If a teen feels like she is old enough to have sex, she should be able to take care of her own body. Some teens need support and some teens don't. If the teen needs support, then she will tell her parent whether the law makes her or not. If she doesn't need support, they she won't tell her parent. The law shouldn't force anybody.

    2. Counterclaim: I think that parents should not be notified of their teens sexual services. Only 43% of women told their parents before an abortion. There is a reason for that, it's not because they dont want support it's because they will likely face physical consequences. Logos

Arguement: How can you take away the parental rights of ones own child? Parents love their kids to death. All they want is for them to be safe and well protected but how can they do that if they aren't informed of what their kids are up to? If a kid wants a serious procedure such as abortion don't you think it's fair for the parents to know? Put yourself in their shoes, wouldn't you wanna know what your kid is up to? I',m sure that all parents want their kid to be safe.

Ethos: There's a difference in being a child and being a teenager, teens need freedom and strict parents equals sneaky teens. Me as teen I make many mistakes but in order to overcome or narrow your future path you learn from the bad choices or decisions you make or made in the present or the past. Parents should have trust in the kids without trust there is no communication without communication there's not gonna be a good relationship

I understand how parents feel about having the right to have sex and than abort the baby without there consent. My mother would freak out if she found I got a female a baby than abort it.

I can understand what you are saying about parents feeling they should have the right to give consent for their child to have an abortion, but as a fellow teen I know there are many parents who would use this to control their child when it comes to sexual activities.

Counterclaim: I too understand what your saying about how parents might feel, but how do you think the kid feels? It does affect them more than the parent you know, and everyone is allowed privacy so shouldn't teens be allowed it too? Put yourself in a teens position and think about it.

I agree with Kishon, parents will use this to control their kids when it comes to sexual activities. Think about this, if you was a father and your kid was having sex and/or having an abortion, wouldn't you want to be concerned about it and help him/her out.

Parents love their kids and are concerned about their safety constantly. As a parent, how would you feel if your child is out there getting abortions without you even knowing? The thought of your child having sex is very traumatic. At least you would want to be notified if your child is getting an abortion so you can know what is going on with them. A parent only wants to protect their child from the physical and emotional harms of having sex.

There is no reason why parents shouldn't be notified about their children. Their schools' send home report cards to let them know their grades, so why shouldn't the same be for and sexual health procedures? You wouldn't want your sweet daughter to be harmed by anything, so don't rely on anyone else's judgement except yours.

Okay but that's school. Yes parents should know what goes on in their kids' lives but not every child feels safe with telling their parents certain things. It's their body and they have the right to do what they want with it. It's to protect their body.

Yes, you may want to make sure and be informed that you're child to not be harmed but, the lack of trust in your child can be a bad thing too. If you're talking and influencing your child good enough about being safe then you shouldn't really have anything to worry about. Its better to do your best educating them and trusting for what they do.

I believe your claim is in all ways correct but think about the fact that some parents may not react a good way to news of there daughter being pregnant or having a STI . Teens have killed there child of fear of thinking there parents would find out. Maybe that not telling is good.

All teens don't have the right choice making when it comes to pregnancy. If you are a teen going through the abortion process, how do you think your parent feels? By you not telling them what is going on, you are putting yourself in a position, that if anything goes wrong, your parents will be at fault for not setting a good example, and for not caring for you. With such a scary procedure as abortion, don't you think your parents have the right to know what is going on? Counterclaim: While many people are in favor of parental notification you have to also look at things from the teens point of view. They are scared and feel pressured enough don't you think notifying parents increases the pressure because not only are they being judged by people but they have to go through abuse from the parent whether it be verbally or physically. Teens also have to learn responsibility too, if they want to access something like abortion they should be allowed to make that decision by themselves because it affects them mostly than the parent.

Argument: Why should teens have the choice to tell there parents about what there doing be hide there back? A teen went to a clinic that she needed have parental consent to check her self because she was pregnant , so she told her boyfriend to hit her stomach with a bat to kill the baby because she didn't want to tell her parents. I believe thats why teens shouldn't need parental consent.

This is a perfect example of why minors need parental consent because the girl could have died. It shouldn't have to go as far as this minor took it, because if she had got the parental consent then she would have been able to tell her parents about the pregnancy and then she could have gotten an abortion the proper way and she then wouldn't have to put herself at risk of dying by trying to get hit in the stomach with a bat which could do serious damage to her body.

Doctors should notify parents before a minor gets an abortion because this is dangerous. When a minor gets an abortion, they go to free-standing abortion clinics for serous medical procedures by doctors they have never seen before -- without anyone in their families even knowing. Obviously, there are going to be other factors at work, but of the 16 states without true parental involvement laws, 12 of them are among the 13 states with the highest teen abortion rates (by state of residence of the minor). All of the 13 states with the lowest teen abortion rates in the country have parental involvement laws. Having doctors notify parents before an abortion will help lower the rate of abortions.

Doctors shouldn't notify parents before a minor gets an abortion. Doing this would make the situation DANGEROUS. What if the teen has problems at home. For example, they could be hurt violently such as physically, verbally and emotionally. Among those adolescents who did not talk to their parents, about one-third had already experienced violence in the family and feared it would occur again. Therefore, making the situation dangerous would be doctors notifying parents before a minor receives an abortion.

    2. However, think about what happens after an abortion. The teen could be depressed or emotionally compromised, and any of their parents would be worried. They would not know how to help them at all, because they don't know what's wrong. Trust would become an issue between parents and their child.

When a teen gets pregnant unexpectedly they should be able to talk to their parents about their situation. First of all they are basically still a child themselves and they don't know how to take care of a child that they weren't even ready for. A parent should be there to guide them through it all. Secondly, if they are thinking about having an abortion they should have at least their parent there to help them with what choice they should make because deciding whether or not to have an abortion is a hard choice to make on your own. A parent should be notified for a teen to have access to sexual health services.

As a parent you're child can be the biggest concern to have, you would want to know you're child is doing the right thing and how much of a big deal it can be. For example for having your child on abortion. Having a baby can be one of the most important things to have in a mothers daughter life. And having her take it away of even getting into that position can be hurtful. You should be there for you're child at all times in a necessary situation like that.

Due to the logical facts I found and the evidence supporting it I believe that parents should be notified about their child going to sexual health service clinics. Minors live with their parents/guardians because they are underage. Which means if the minor tell the parent they are pregnant and the parent continues to make the minor have an abortion, the child will then have to go home with the adult where the child could get abused for having sex and not using protection and getting pregnant on top of that .

Teens should need to notify their parents to access sexual health services. For example can you imagine a teen girl having an abortion. Abortions are just wrong. You are getting rid of a life. Can you also imagine a teen girl under 18 having sex. Teens do not always make the best decisions. We need to act like people right now. It is the parents right to know what their child is doing especially when it is something sexual.

First and for most, abortions aren't wrong. They are a decision made by the two people coping with the situation. To your point you are getting rid of a life but that is your decision. Also if you have sex at a young age, it is imaginable because there are young children having sex more and more everyday, so that claim is inaccurate. If parents are notified that their child is pregnant, they might go into the first account they feel at that moment, and that is most likely anger. Causing the child to become emotionally, physically, and mentally hurt.

Arguement:Parents have a right to know about what their kids are up to. Coming from an actual teen, I believe that they should know. What if something bad should happen to the teen? It's best to let a parent know what's up before doing anything serious because at the end of the day they are the ones who have to deal with the outcome. So its better to let them know so they can go through it with you. Who knows, maybe they can be of more help than harm because they can offer good advice. This actually helps to build relationships between parents and their children.

I am a teenager living in the same country as you. Seeing that the rate of abortions are increasing due to the parental notification not being needed. Since, I am a teenager I know that having an abortion at this age wouldn't be easy. You would probably need support and assistance. Having the teenager's parents not be notified would just make it harder on the teenager because they would go through the abortion on her own. Having doctors notify parents before a minor has an abortion is the best idea, trust me, a teenager living in the same country as you.

I understand that you are a teen and you believe that because abortion rates in your country are rising so therefore there should be parental consent upon doing a risky procedure. However, sexual health is not just wrapped around abortions. There are teens going around having sex without parental consent. You cannot control that. If you take away the right of teens being able to freely go and get care for themselves you're not being considerate about the teens out there whom may need condoms, birth control or just want to get tested for STI's or pregnancy tests. At least, if teens have the protection they need, then the thought of even getting pregnant or an STI wouldn't be in mind.

Minors are not always capable of dealing with problems on their own. Picture yourself being a minor who is planning on getting an abortion, you would be lost, you wouldn't know what to do. you would feel alone. It was said from experiences from nurses that pregnant teenagers would usually want their mother to know and help them deal with their pregnancy. Even if most teens are afraid to tell their mothers they end up telling them. It also turns out that mothers are supportive to their daughters, although at first they're often angry at first. Also even if its the minors body that get pregnant at this young and influential age, parents should still at least be notified about their minors sexual activity to make sure the proper protection is being used.

It' s important to notify their parents about their teens sexual health. Parents are responsible for their teen until they become an adult an are able to take care of themselves. If anything happens to their child whether they become infected with an STI or become pregnant they must rely on their parents for support, and help; both financially and mentally. If a teen were to undergo a risky procedure such as an abortion that could cause problems for them, its up to their parents to take care of expenses and more. Its also important that parents get their child protected for future references because you are never 100% what your teen is doing.

Being a teenager in this generation and knowing the things that occur in the life of a teen, I disagree with this statement. Teens are usually easily influenced during this period of their life. Although they may be pressured or influenced to do certain things, they know exactly what they're doing while they are doing it. For example, when they're having sex. If THEY made the decision to go have sex, then THEY should make the decision to have an abortion. It's not the parent's decisions, it's the teen's decision. Therefore, doctors shouldn't have to notify a parent before a minor receives an abortion.
